Heat Pump Questions and Answers

Does a heat pump replace my furnace?

The short answer is no. In our climate, heat pumps are best used in tandem with your furnace as part of a dual-fuel heating system.

What is a dual-fuel heating system?

A dual-fuel heating system means you can use two different sources to heat your home. For example, if you have both a gas furnace and a heat pump, the two options you have would be natural gas or electricity.

How does a heat pump work?

In cooling mode, it works like your typical air conditioner, absorbing heat from inside your home and using refrigerant to transfer it outside. In heating mode, the refrigerant runs in reverse, allowing the heat pump to absorb heat from outside air (even when it’s cold!) and bring it into your home while transferring cold air from your home to the outdoors.

What are the benefits of a heat pump?

  • Can heat and cool your home
  • More energy-efficient than traditional heating systems at certain temperatures
  • When part of a dual-fuel heating system, increases the chance you’ll save money on your monthly utility bills
  • Reduces your home’s carbon footprint
  • Often quieter than traditional systems

What are the benefits of a dual-fuel heating system?

  • Versatility: Use electricity or traditional fuel to heat your home, depending on utility prices and comfort levels. Over time, this will help cut costs and carbon emissions.
  • Reliability: Heat pumps start losing efficiency when temperatures drop to extremely cold conditions, so we’ll set a temperature threshold that will notify your thermostat when to switch from your heat pump to your traditional heating system, ensuring you’ll be comfortable no matter how cold it gets.
  • Security: With two options for providing heat to your home, you’ll have a backup plan if one unit stops working unexpectedly.

If I have two heat sources, when do I use the right one?

In our climate, heat pumps are used to their maximum efficiency in the transitional seasons — before and after the coldest months of the year. With current heat pump technology, it’s more efficient and cost-effective to use a traditional heating source during extreme temperatures. Our team will help set up your thermostat to switch modes automatically depending on the temperature, giving you maximum efficiency and peace of mind.

Where will my heat pump go?

In most cases, a heat pump will be outside your home like (or in place of) your air conditioner.

Does a heat pump cost more than a new air conditioner?

The upfront investment of a heat pump is generally higher than an air conditioner, but the heat pump system is doing far more for your home than your basic cooling system. There may also be local and federal energy rebates that help offset this initial investment.
