Vacations are always great, but unfortunately, it’s also a time for weather-related disasters, home break-ins, and other unfortunate home system occurrences. Keep your house and HVAC system safe and sound while you are enjoying the time away from home by going over these preparations.
Turning off your main water supply during vacation is a smart way to avoid unexpected flooding while you’re away.
If a pipe or part of a utility begins to leak or bursts while you’re gone and the main valve is open, water will continue to run or spew; however, water will not come through if the main water supply is off.
When leaving your home for a vacation, you should bypass your water softener and unplug it if it regenerates based on time and not usage.
Also, take the time to set your water heater to “vacation” mode. You don’t want to be keeping a huge tank of hot water while nobody is at home using it. Turn off the water heater, set it to “vacation,” or lower the temperature (if you have the traditional tank type).
Dehumidifiers automatically turn on when the humidity levels are too high and turn off when they have reached the optimum range. You can leave it this running while you are away so you don’t come back to a mold-infested home.
Don’t turn off your HVAC system; simply adjust your thermostat by lowering the temperature 5 to 10 degrees lower than normal to preserve energy. Don’t lower the temperature too much, or else you will come back to an uncomfortable home and broken HVAC equipment.
