It is my belief there are certain situations which call for a duct cleaning but it isn’t something you do like annual preventive maintenance on your furnace.
For example, if you are building a new house, that is a good time to have them cleaned to get the drywall dust and construction debris out of your ducts.
If you are moving into a house that has never had it done, that is a good time – especially if you or your family has allergies. Get rid of the previous owner’s pet hair and dandruff in your ducts.
If you are selling your home and have had pets, it may be attractive to potential buyers to have your pet’s dandruff/hair and associated odor out of the ducts.
If you live in a 75-year-old house that has never had the ducts cleaned, that may be a good time to have them cleaned. There may be enough build up to actually cause air restriction in the ducts.
If you have lived in the house for a number of years and still have the same people and pets, it may not be a good time to have them done. Spend your money on a good filtration system instead. Your bed and carpet probably have the same if not more pollutants in it as your air ducts.
